Using AI Ethically

When using generative AI tools, it’s important to keep human values at the center - fairness, accountability, transparency, ethics, and safety.

Understand that AI systems like ChatGPT may tailor responses based on patterns in your input. They are influenced by the data they’ve been trained on and by the way you interact with them.

In academic work, you are part of the scholarly conversation. That means citing others responsibly and contributing your own ideas. AI can help you brainstorm, but your voice, analysis, and argument must remain your own.

Ethical Guidelines for Generative AI

Originality
Your work should reflect your own thinking, voice, and ideas. While AI tools can assist with brainstorming or drafting they should not complete assignments for you.

Acknowledgment and Attribution
Always acknowledge and cite your use of generative AI tools. Both APA and MLA now offer guidelines for citing generative AI tools like ChatGPT.

Data Security and Safety
Anything you type into an AI tool is no longer private. Avoid sharing personal, sensitive, or confidential information about yourself, others, or your institution. Treat AI interactions as public, not private.
