iThenticate

A Guide for AUS Faculty and Graduate Students

Welcome

Welcome to the iThenticate Guide. This guide provides an overview of iThenticate, a tool for checking originality and ensuring proper citation before submitting scholarly work. Use it to learn how to request a submission and interpret reports.

What is iThenticate?

iThenticate is a text-matching software developed by the creators of Turnitin, designed for researchers and academics to review their work prior to publication. Leading publishers and research institutions use iThenticate to:

  • Address potential text-matching issues
  • Identify unintended duplication
  • Verify proper citation of non-original content

With iThenticate, authors can check their work against a vast database of web pages and scholarly sources, generating a similarity score and report for review. Use iThenticate to publish with confidence!

iThenticate does NOT:

  • Save a copy of any submitted file
  • Compare text in different languages
  • Match diagrams, tables, or images

The Similarity Report

iThenticate scans a submission against its content database. If matching text is found, it’s flagged for review in the Similarity Report, which provides:

  • An overall percentage of matched text based on word count
  • Details on matching sources and specific text matches

Important Notes:

  • iThenticate does not determine if matched text is plagiarized. Use your judgment to identify whether highlighted text (such as quotes) is correctly attributed.
  • The presence of matching text doesn’t necessarily indicate plagiarism, and there is no correct “threshold” for matching percentages. Each discipline may have different standards for quoting.
