Tracking Research Impact

Types of Research Metrics

Impact metrics can be divided into three broad categories, each with their own uses and measurements.

Select one to learn more:

Citation-Based Metrics

  • Consider the number of times your publications have been cited, and how you can dig into these citations to demonstrate impact.

Alternative Metrics

  • Consider how people interact with your research outputs outside of academia. This can include traditional media (e.g. newspapers) and social media (e.g. Twitter, blogs, Wikipedia).

Journal Metrics

  • Consider the impact of a journal by looking at the number of citations its published articles receive.
