Adobe Digital Editions (for ProQuest Ebook Central and Ebsco Ebooks)

Adobe Digital Editions is the recommended software for downloading ebooks from ProQuest or EBSCOhost, which use Adobe DRM on their ebooks (EPUB and PDF format).

What is DRM?

Digital Rights Management (DRM) are access controls that allow publishers to protect copyrighted content. DRM applies to most ebooks found on ProQuest Ebook Central and EBSCOhost. Examples of these controls include:

  • limiting the number of users who can access an ebook at one time
  • limiting the length of time you can download an ebook
  • limiting the number of pages that can be copied, printed, or downloaded
  • requiring users to download special software, like Adobe Digital Editions or BlueFire Reader, in order to download eBooks

Downloading Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions is a free app you can download from the App Store or Google Play.

You can use other eReader software, such as BlueFire Reader, as long as it supports Adobe DRM. Search in the app store of your choice for 'Adobe DRM' to get a list of potentially suitable apps.

Adobe Digital Editions can be used with many devices, such as Kobo, Nook, and iPad. However not all devices are compatible, including Kindle, Supernote, and ReMarkable tablets. A list of supported devices is available in the links below.

You will need an Adobe ID in order to authorize Adobe Digital Editions or BlueFire Reader. See "Install and Authorize Adobe Digital Editions" in the links below.
