Welcome to Legal Research

Welcome to the Legal Research Using LexisNexis subject guide.

Use the tabs to locate resources that will help you get started with your research.

Where to find legal information in LexisNexis

Classes such as BLW 301 & 302 may require legal research. AUS Library subscribes to one of the foremost important resources for legal research, the LexisNexis Academic database.

Once inside LexisNexis you will find tabs along the left hand side for News, US Legal, International Legal, Companies, Subject Areas and Sources. There are also boxes in the main portion of the page which facilitate easy searches in the various areas.

Click on the US Legal bar and select the area in need to research.  Choices include Federal & State Cases & Codes, Shepard's Citations, Federal Statues, Law Reviews, Tax Law, and Patents.

LexisNexis Search Basics

LexisNexis allows users to search by "Terms and Connectors," or "Natural Language".

Terms and connectors: Search terms must be linked together using AND or OR as well as speciak LexisNexis connectors such as PUBLICATION() and w/3. Terms not connected using AND/OR are treated as a phrase.

Natural language: Enter a search in plain English as you would do in an internet search engine.

See LexisNexis' Developing a Search for help using wildcard characters and proper names, plurals, etc.

LexisNexis also offers online tutorials to help you get started as well as online help.
