Alternative Metrics

Alternative metrics, also known as Altmetrics, are metrics and qualitative data that are complementary to traditional, citation-based metrics. They measure the number of times a research output is tweeted, downloaded, viewed, discussed etc., pointing to the public or social visibility of the output.

Researchers who work in disciplines that are not associated with the accumulation of citations in available academic resources, can use altmetrics to demonstrate the reach and significance of their work.

Altmetrics should be used to complement traditional measures of impact to demonstrate a more complete picture of impact, both academic and societal.

Social Networking Sites

When building a research profile that will provide evidence of your individual impact and to build your own research profile, consider signing on to social networking sites, listing publications and tracking how often articles have been viewed and who is following.  This is also a way to build an online profile and make links with academics and researchers who share the same interests.  Popular academic networking websites include:
